Road Legal Electric Dirt Bikes Uk
Road Legal Electric Dirt Bikes UK
A road-legal electric dirt bike is one that has been type-approved (homologated) so it can be registered with the DVLA, given a number plate and ridden on UK roads. Most electric dirt bikes are not road legal — but a handful of factory road-legal models are, and they are the only legal way to ride an eMoto on a public road in the UK.
What does road legal mean in the UK?
For UK road use, a motorcycle needs European Whole Vehicle Type Approval (eWVTA) under one of the L-categories. For electric dirt bikes the relevant category is L1e — restricted to 28mph (45km/h), treated as a moped equivalent, accessible with a CBT and a provisional licence. Some larger road-legal eMotos fall into L3e (full motorcycle category).

Sur-Ron Light Bee L1e
The Sur-Ron Light Bee L1e is the road-legal version of the Light Bee X. Restricted to 28mph, fully homologated, requires CBT + provisional licence + insurance + L plates if on a CBT. This is the volume road-legal eMoto in the UK.
Talaria Sting L1e
The Talaria Sting L1e is the road-legal Sting. Same 28mph restriction, same licence requirements. A natural Sur-Ron alternative for road riders.
RFN Ares RS Endurance
The RFN Ares RS Endurance is the L1e model in the RFN range, with a 74V 4kW system designed for daily commuting.
Stark Varg EX
The Stark Varg EX is at the other end of the spectrum — a road-legal version of the 80hp Varg with an 18" rear wheel. This is L3e-class and requires the full motorcycle licence path, not just a CBT.
What do you need to ride one on UK roads?
- CBT certificate for L1e moped-class bikes
- Provisional or full UK driving licence
- Insurance — third party minimum, fully comp recommended
- DVLA registration and number plate (we handle this on supply)
- Vehicle tax — currently £0 for fully electric vehicles
- L plates if you are riding on a CBT
- Approved helmet and (recommended) proper riding gear
How fast does a road-legal electric dirt bike go?
L1e is restricted to 28mph by law. L3e bikes like the Stark Varg EX are not speed-restricted, but the licence requirement is higher.
